Clusia (Clusioides Cupeillo)
Clusia (Clusioides Cupeillo)
The Clusia plant, often referred to as the autograph tree or pitch apple, is an interesting and versatile plant native to tropical regions of the Americas. It is known for its thick, leathery, and glossy green leaves that have an oblong or oval shape. One of the unique features of the Clusia is that its leaves are sturdy enough to be written on with a sharp object, hence the nickname "autograph tree." Clusia can grow as a shrub or a small tree, typically reaching heights of 25 to 30 feet if left unpruned. It produces small, pink or white flowers that are quite attractive, followed by fruits that resemble an apple in shape. The fruit is not typically eaten by humans but can be consumed by wildlife. This plant is quite hardy and can tolerate a range of conditions, including salt spray, making it an excellent choice for coastal gardens. It is also used as a hedge or a privacy screen due to its dense foliage. The Clusia prefers well-drained soil and can thrive in both full sun and partial shade. It is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal pruning and having moderate drought tolerance once established.
